I did my undergraduate work at Barnard College, where I majored in English and French. After a year teaching English in France, I began the joint Ph.D. program in African American Studies and English at Yale University. Prior to coming to Vassar, I taught in the English department at Indiana University, where I had the good fortune to meet and bounce ideas around with Kiese Laymon and Tyrone Simpson. My research and teaching interests center on Anglophone Caribbean, Francophone Caribbean and African American literatures and cultures, with a particular focus on issues of trauma, memory and narrative ethics. I am currently at work on a book titled Faulkner’s Colonial Soldiers, which is a study of representations of race, imperialism and the limits of democratic sociability in William Faulkner’s world war fictions.
