Natalie Friedman graduated from Vassar in 1995, with double majors in English and French. She went on to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in American Literature, with a focus on twentieth-century immigrant narratives at New York University. During graduate school, she also worked as a preceptor and faculty mentor in the Expository Writing Program, leading to a dramatic expansion of her teaching and research interests to include the fields of writing and pedagogy. She taught at Boston University and Marymount College of Fordham University before coming to Vassar in 2004 as the Writing Center Director, a position she vacated in 2006 to take on a leadership role in the Learning, Teaching, and Research Center. She has published her literary criticism in academic journals such as Legacy: A Journal of Women’s Writing, Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction, and MELUS: The Journal of the Society of Multiethnic Literatures of the United States; some of her literary nonfiction has appeared in The Connecticut Review.
