Invitation to Prospective English Majors

To all those considering the English major-

            We encourage you to explore the diverse and myriad opportunities that the Vassar English Department affords its students. With a wide range of course offerings, English majors are able to maintain as broad or narrow a focus within their coursework as they choose. Whether you identify primarily as a writer, literary analyst, lover of great fiction, storyteller, artist or otherwise, you will find that you can create a niche for yourself in the English major. The English department faculty is here to support your intellectual growth and spark your curiosity. As a unique group of scholars and artists with varied talents and backgrounds, the English department faculty provides students with not only the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue their intellectual interests, but also the inquisitiveness and inspiration.

            As students at a liberal arts institution, it is our responsibility to take advantage of the multiplicity of disciplines that are available to us. While choosing a major can be anything but straightforward for students whose academic interests extend beyond a single field, the commitment to one or more specific departments is not restrictive, but useful in providing a medium through which to develop academically. English majors have the opportunity to explore the entire universe through the wide-ranging lens of literary study. Given its objective to produce thinkers who can use literature and art to engage critically with the world around them, the English department provides a home for anyone willing to embrace and investigate the wonders of life and the mysteries of being human.
