Conduct and Attendance of students in classes

Productive classroom performance depends upon cooperation between students and faculty and collegial respect among students. The Department of English expects you to attend class and submit papers on time, and in the interest of fairness insists upon this standard for all students. The Student Handbook defines the conditions (documented illness or emergency) under which absence and late papers may be excused. Otherwise, the following penalties are assessed for missed classes and late papers.

Attendance

In a class that meets once a week, two absences will result in your grade being lowered one full grade (e.g. from A to B). Three absences will result in your failing the course.

In a class that meets two or three times a week, three absences will result in your grade being lowered one full grade. Five absences will result in your failing the course.

Deadlines for papers

You must submit papers on the date designated, unless you have been granted an extension in advance of the deadline. Papers less than one week late will be penalized in accordance with the policy of the individual instructor; make sure you know and understand that policy. It is the policy of the English Department that papers a week or more late receive a failing grade. You must nevertheless complete all written work assigned in the course in order to pass it.

Courtesy in the Classroom

Courtesy in the classroom requires that you arrive on time and be prepared, and that you do not disrupt the class by casual leave-taking while it is in session. The educational process requires an exchange of ideas in which you both participate actively in the discussion and listen respectfully to others when they speak.
